SUBJUNTIVO DEL ESPAÑOL Y COMO EXPRESARLO EN INGLÉS

FORMAS DE TRADUCIR EL SUBJUNTIVO ESPAÑOL AL INGLÉS

Quiero que te quedes aquí.

No quiero que le chita muerda al perro


El presente escrito ilustra la diversidad de formas empleadas por el idioma inglés para expresar las conjugaciones del subjuntivo español. Esto implica un aprendizaje especial tanto para el extranjero que estudia nuestra lengua, como para el hispanohablante que desea hablar el inglés. El modo subjuntivo es de uso demasiado limitado, casi inexistente en el inglés.

1. SUBJUNTIVO CON OJALÁ.

Ojalá, ojalá que: I hope that/I whish that/ if only
(una buena posibilidad de que la situación suceda)
Ojalá que mi candidato gane la elección.
I hope thay my candidate wins the election

Ojalá que pudiéramos hacer el viaje a Lima
I wish we could take the trip to Lima

Ojalá que todo salga bien
Let’s hope everything turns out all right!

¡Ojalá que se muera!
I hope he drops dead!

Parece que va a parar de llover.
It looks as if it’s going to stop raining
¡Ojalá!
Oh, I hope so. (también: I wish it would!)

1 Observemos que Ojalá se puede traducir como I hope, I wish. También:

¡Ojalá yo fuera rico!
I wish I were rich!

¡Ojalá lloviera!
I wish it would rain!

- Seguro que apruebas
- I am sure you’ll pass
- !Ojalá!
- I hope so!

¡Ojalá! se puede traducir de estas tres formas según los contextos:
Oh, I hope so!
Oh, I wish it would
if only!

Recuerda que en español: ¡“Ojalá” siempre toma subjuntivo con verbos! (¡Ojalá que lo recuerdes!)


2. EL PRESENTE SIMPLE DE SUBJUNTIVO DEL ESPAÑOL
Ejemplos: hable, hables, coma, viva.

La forma más conocida y fácil de traducción en muchos casos, es con el INFINITIVO en inglés:
Quiero que tú hables.
I want you TO SPEAK.
Es preferible que vaya
it´s preferable for him (her, you) TO GO

No obstante en ocasiones son posibles VARIAS FORMAS de traducir al inglés el subjuntivo:
Es posible que él apruebe
It’s possible for him TO PASS.
It’s possible (that) he may pass.
It’s possible (that) he’s passing.
It’s possible (that) he will pass.

Espero que ganen
I hope they win (will win, are winning).

Como presente normal del inglés:
Es una lástima que usted no pueda hacerlo. It is a pity you can’t do it.
No creo que la casa tenga 25 cuartos. I don’t believe it has 25 rooms.
No, no es verdad que mi padre esté preso. No, it isn’t true that my father is in jail.
Toma esta medicina en caso que la necesites. Take this medicine in case you need it.
(En el inglés dicen: “en caso de que la necesitas”...)

Presente progresivo del inglés:
Es sorprendente que Pablo no asista
it’s surprising that Pablo isn’t attending

Con may:
Ellos no lo comprarán aunque sean ricos
They will not buy it although they MAY be rich

Con will
Es posible que Enrique fracase
It’s possible (that )Enrique WILL fail

¿Vas a ir a la peluquería hoy?
No. Temo que el peluquero tenga muchos clientes.
No. I’m am afraid the barber WILL have many customers.

¿Cuándo vienen tus padres?
Espero que lleguen mañana.
I hope they WILL arrive tomorrow.


3. EL PRETÉRITO SIMPLE DE SUBJUNTIVO

Hablara, hablaras, hablara, habláramos, hablaran

Como subjuntivo del inglés:
Si ganara la lotería, le daría $10.000 a los pobres.
If I were to win the lottery, I would donate $10.000 to the poor.
(Recordemos que normalmente se conjuga I WAS (en indicativo)... pero no en estas construcciones subjuntivas en inglés).

Como pretérito del inglés:
Participaría en la manifestación si viviera en Washington,.
I would participate in the demonstration if I LIVED in Washington.

Haríamos el viaje si tuviéramos dinero
We would make the trip, if we had money

El pretérito de subjuntivo traducido como infinitivo:

Juan quería que su hermano hiciera el trabajo
John wanted his brother TO DO the work

El pidió que Andrés lo hiciera
He asked Andrew TO DO it

El profesor quería que los estudiantes dijeran la respuesta
The professor wanted his students TO GIVE the answer

El pretérito simple de subjuntivo traducido como WOULD:

El deseó que ella viniera a la fiesta
He wished that she would come to the party

El desearía que ella viniera a la fiesta
He would have wished that she WOULD come to the party


4. EL PRESENTE PERFECTO DE SUBJUNTIVO

Haya, hayas, haya, hayamos, hayan
HAVE, HAS + Past Participle

No pienso que ellos hayan hecho la tarea
I do not think that they have done their homework (Presente HAVE + PP)

¿Ya han pagado ustedes la cuenta de teléfono?
Have you already paid the phone bill?
No recuerdo...no, no creo que la hayamos pagado todavía
I don’t remember...No, I don’t think we’ve paid it yer.

Ojalá que algunos hayan venido. I hope some (of them) have come.


5. EL PRETÉRITO PERFECTO DE SUBJUNTIVO

Hubiera + PP hubieras, hubiera, hubiéramos, hubieran

El había deseado que ella hubiera venido (viniera) a la fiesta
He had wished that she WOULD HAVE come to the party

Hubiera hecho la tarea, si lo hubiera sabido.
I would have done the homework, if I HAD known it.

Habrías visto la película, si hubieras llegado a tiempo.
You would have seen the movie, if you had arrived on time.

Me alegré que me hubieran llamado
I was happy that they had called me.
